Declined: develop the pieces
The c4 pawn pressures d5. Develop before choosing when to exchange; Bg5 adds pressure on the knight defending the center.
Accepted: recover the pawn
White recovers c4 with a developing bishop move. Black’s c5 challenges d4, so White must watch the center after castling.
Exchange structure
The early exchange fixes the pawn structure. White can develop naturally and later choose a queenside or central plan according to the pieces.
Slav Defense introduction
The move a4 restrains ...b5, which would defend the c4 pawn. White prepares to recover it while Black develops the light-squared bishop outside the pawn chain.
Tarrasch structure
Black challenges the center immediately with ...c5. White develops toward a kingside fianchetto and must evaluate the central exchanges rather than memorize one pawn structure.
