Frequently asked
questions.
Everything you need to know about finding your next chess move.
01Is Chess Move Finder free?+
Yes, completely. You do not need an account and there are no daily limits. The analysis runs in your browser.
02How does the best-move finder work?+
It uses Stockfish, a leading open-source chess engine, to search possible moves and continuations, then evaluate the resulting positions for the side to move.
03What do the numbers mean, such as +1.24?+
A positive score favors White and a negative score favors Black. The number is an engine evaluation, not a literal pawn count. M4 indicates a forced mate in four moves; check the line to see which side is mating.
04Can I paste a position from another site?+
Yes. Copy a FEN string into the FEN field and choose Load. The board updates to that position, and you can copy the FEN back out.
05Is using an engine to find moves cheating?+
Engine analysis is useful for study and post-game review. Do not use engine assistance during rated online games; it violates fair-play rules on chess platforms.
06Do I need to create an account?+
No. Login is optional. The move finder works without an account.
07Which engine version do you use?+
The tool runs Stockfish 17.1 in WebAssembly. The engine version is shown above the board.
08Does it work on mobile?+
Yes. The board supports touch input and the layout adapts to phones and tablets.
