Italian Game
Develop quickly, watch the center, and choose when to prepare d4. These five study lines show different responses to Black’s development.
Study this opening
Quiet development
The bishop eyes f7 while c3 supports a later d4. Castling completes an important part of development; the central break can wait until the pieces support it.
Two Knights with d3
The pawn on d3 protects e4. White keeps a stable center rather than immediately entering a forcing attack on f7.
Preparing the central break
White gains a central pawn pair but must answer the check on b4. The recapture develops a knight; central space still needs active pieces to defend it.
Evans Gambit introduction
White gives up a pawn to gain time and central activity. It is a gambit, so development and initiative must justify the material investment; there is no guaranteed attack.
A quiet bishop retreat
Retreating the bishop preserves its diagonal while both sides complete development. Do not confuse a familiar setup with permission to ignore the opponent’s threats.
