How Many Chess Grandmasters Are There? An October 2026 Count

FIDE’s October 2026 player download contains 1,904 GM records. See the counting method and why active, registered, and all-time totals differ.

FIDE's October 2026 full player download contains 1,904 player records with the GM title, counted on October 16, 2026. That is a count of GM records in the downloaded register, including records flagged inactive. It should not be presented as the number currently competing or the total number of people ever awarded the title.

The source, date, and definition matter. Two answers can differ because one counts active players while another includes inactive records, or because they use different months and title categories.

What we counted

We used the full XML player list linked from FIDE's official download page, which identified the file as updated October 14, 2026. The count includes records whose open-title field is exactly GM, with each FIDE player identifier counted once.

| Measure in that download | Count | | --- | --- | | Records with the GM title | 1,904 | | GM records without an inactive flag | 1,332 | | GM records with an inactive flag | 572 |

The two flag groups sum to the total. “Without an inactive flag” describes the register field; it is not an independent finding that every person in that group played a tournament recently.

The download contains many other registered players, so counting every record or searching for the letters GM anywhere in the file would not give the same result. The title field is the relevant filter.

Why this is not an all-time census

A current registration file and a historical record of every title award answer different questions. Do not infer the number of living grandmasters, deceased grandmasters, or all titles ever awarded simply from this snapshot.

An all-time count would need a historical title-award record and a clear policy for revoked titles, corrections, and duplicate identities. A living-player count would also need reliable information about deaths. Neither was established by this download analysis.

When you see a different total, check its definition before deciding it is wrong. A rounded estimate, an active-player list, and a historical title list should not be compared as if they were identical datasets.

GM and WGM are separate titles

Grandmaster, abbreviated GM, is an open FIDE title: it is not restricted to men. Woman Grandmaster, abbreviated WGM, is a separate title with different qualification requirements. This count does not add WGM-only records to the GM total.

A woman who holds the open GM title belongs in the GM count. The important distinction is the recorded title, not the player's gender. Similarly, an online arena title with a different abbreviation is not automatically an over-the-board GM title.

For qualification rules, consult the FIDE Handbook and the applicable title regulations. Do not treat an online platform's displayed rating as proof that a player holds a FIDE title.

A title is different from a current rating

GM is a title, while a rating changes with eligible results. A grandmaster's rating can fall without the title automatically disappearing. Likewise, a high rating on a website does not by itself award GM status.

Check the source again when you need a newer answer

FIDE's download links are updated over time. If you use the file in another month, repeat the title filter and report the new file date instead of assuming it still contains 1,904 GM records. Preserve the method as well as the number.

For your own study, a title count is background information rather than a training target. Review one completed game in Game Review and choose a specific skill to practice next.
